There is a Canadian Section and a United States Section of the Commission; each Section of the Commission functions under a Commissioner. The Surveyor General is the Canadian member of the Commission. 

The Canadian Commissioner while acting within the scope of the member’s duties or employment shall be deemed to be a servant of the Crown.

For administrative purposes, the Canadian Section of the Commission is within the Surveys and Mapping Branch of the Department of Natural Resources. However, the Commissioner reports to the Minister of Foreign Affairs.
